QUILTING design PROCESS

As a quilter, I know how much love, time and effort goes into sewing your quilt top. Part of the service at Sweet Gum Quilting is to make sure you are thrilled with your completed quilt.

How do you choose a quilting design?

Sweet Gum Quilting has an extensive library of digital quilting designs. You may know the exact design you want quilted, but sometimes it may be hard to decide.

The Quilting Design Process helps you preview different quilting designs. By taking a photo of your quilt top and discussing your vision for the completed quilt, I will provide you with a digital image of three of your preferred quilting designs overlayed onto your quilt top. This is a free service to show you how the design will look stitched on your quilt.

When you have confirmed the quilting design you can then choose the density of the quilting.

Step 1 – design brief

The first step is to discuss your vision for the quilting. Consultations can be done over the phone or via email.

Things to Consider

  • Is the quilt top a traditional or modern style?

  • Is the quilt for a child or an adult and will it be used daily or put on display?

  • What is your preferred quilting design? For example: modern, geometric, traditional, feathers, flowers, circles, lines, fans, swirls, or curls etc.

  • How soft or dense would you like the quilting?

  • What type of batting do you want to use? Cotton, wool, polyester, or a blend (low, medium or a high loft)?

  • We will also discuss the colour of threads that will complement both the quilt top and backing fabric.

Step 2 – quiling design proposal

Based on your vision for the quilt, I will prepare a personalised design proposal which will include digital images of your preferred quilting designs overlayed on your quilt top. The quilting design (in black) will appear darker to give a clear idea of how the design works with the quilt pattern. The final quilting result is more subtle with a lighter thread colour.

Step 3 - Density of quilting design

Once you've chosen your quilting design, I will prepare a range of quilting densities (design spacings) for your review and final approval. This allows you to customise the texture and find the perfect look and feel for your finished quilt.

A selection of popular quilting designs are displayed under Quilting Designs. More designs are listed by theme: Traditional and Texture, Modern and Geometric, Flowers and Foliage, Butterflies and Dragonflies, Holiday and Novelty, Feathers, Hearts, and Stars.
